Chad Entry Requirements

Chad Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.

Chad, land-locked Sahelian crossroads between North and Central Africa, hands you the Sahara without the crowds. Visa rules come in three speeds: some travelers walk straight in, most punch an eVisa through a website, a few still queue at an embassy. N'Djamena International Airport (NDJ) lands almost every foreigner; the rest cross dirt borders from Cameroon, Niger or Sudan. Arrive early. Security is tight and the line snakes— November-February when cool-dry air pulls caravans to Zakouma National Park and every other thing to do in Chad. Border police want printed proof: onward ticket, hotel reservation, 400 000 CFA in cash or equivalent. Hand over the paperwork in French and you’ll sail through—eventually.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Chad hands out entry three ways: neighbors don't need a visa, most visitors get electronic pre-approval, and a short blacklist still faces the old-school embassy stamp.

Visa-Free Entry
90 days

Fourteen Central and West African states let their citizens walk straight into Chad—no visa, no paperwork, just the border.

Includes

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months. Overland borders are open—but you'll face extra health checks.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
30 days single-entry; 90 days multiple-entry option available

If you hold a passport from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, any EU member state, China, India, Japan, South Africa—or most other countries—you'll need an eVisa. Apply online before you fly.

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia Germany France Italy Spain Belgium Netherlands Sweden Norway Denmark China India Japan South Africa Brazil Mexico Russia South Korea
How to Apply: Apply on the official Chad eVisa portal (https://evisa-tchad.com). Upload passport bio-page, passport photo, hotel reservation or invitation letter, and return/onward ticket. Processing usually 5–7 working days.
Cost: USD 85 single-entry; USD 200 multiple-entry

Print your eVisa. Hand it over at N'Djamena airport—no app, no scan, just paper. Need longer? The immigration office in N'Djamena can stamp an extension.

Visa Required
30 days (single-entry) is standard; longer validity available on request

A small number of nationalities must secure a visa from a Chadian embassy or consulate prior to travel.

How to Apply: You'll need a security clearance letter. And a yellow-fever certificate. Contact the nearest Chadian embassy—Paris, Washington D.C., Abuja, or wherever's closest—for the application forms. They'll walk you through the requirements.

Processing can take 2–4 weeks and may require security background checks.

Arrival Process

Touch down at N'Djamena International Airport and you’ll clear immigration, grab your bags, and roll through customs in one cool, air-conditioned hall—no maze, no sweat. Overlanders face a different story. From Cameroon you’ll trundle across the Ngueli Bridge; from Niger take the Maine Soroa-Mao route; from Sudan the Adré crossing—longer queues, vehicle searches, patience required.

1
Health Screening
Yellow-fever certificate and temperature check before passport control.
2
Immigration Control
Flash your passport, eVisa, return ticket, hotel print-out. They might shove a cash form at you. Fill it.
3
Baggage Claim & Customs
Grab your bag. March straight to the green customs channel if you’ve nothing to declare—use the red one only if you’re hauling restricted items.

Documents to Have Ready

Passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival date.
eVisa or Visa
Printed copy essential; digital copies are not accepted.
International Certificate of Vaccination (Yellow Card)
You'll need proof of yellow-fever vaccination—travelers aged 9 months and older can't board without it.
Proof of Accommodation
Hotel voucher or invitation letter from host in Chad.
Return/Onward Ticket
Airline ticket or bus ticket out of Chad within visa validity period.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Keep USD 50–100 in small bills for tips and surprise costs—official payments must be in CFA francs (XAF) or euros.
Download offline maps and save your hotel address in French—most immigration officers don't speak English.
Expect baggage scans; avoid wrapping suitcases to speed up the process.

Customs & Duty-Free

Chad customs gives you a stingy duty-free allowance and zero tolerance for drugs, weapons or cultural artifacts. Declare every dollar and every lens or they'll fine you on the spot.

Alcohol
1 liter of spirits or 2 liters of wine per adult
Must be 18 years or older. Beer is widely available locally at chad restaurants and chad hotels.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 g loose tobacco
No age restriction posted, but local norms discourage smoking in public.
Currency
Declare anything at 1,000,000 XAF or above—about USD 1,650—or any foreign currency stack worth USD 10,000.
Use the blue customs form available on arrival; keep a copy for exit.
Gifts/Goods
Personal effects up to XAF 50,000 (≈ USD 85) duty-free
Professional cameras, drones, and satellite phones won't get past customs without temporary import permits—no exceptions.

Prohibited Items

  • Narcotics and psychotropic substances - zero tolerance
  • Firearms and ammunition without Defense Ministry authorization
  • Counterfeit currency and goods - immediate seizure
  • Cultural artifacts and fossils - protected heritage items

Restricted Items

  • Bring a doctor’s letter and prescription for any medication that contains codeine or tramadol.
  • Satellite phones and GPS devices won't work without advance approval from Chad telecommunications authority.
  • Fresh meat and dairy products - subject to veterinary inspection

Health Requirements

You can't enter Chad without a yellow-fever certificate. It's mandatory. Several other vaccines are strongly recommended—get them for a safe trip.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever (for travelers ≥9 months old)

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Meningococcal meningitis ( during dry season)
  • Hepatitis B
  • Rabies (for long stays or animal contact)
  • Polio booster
  • COVID-19 (as per WHO guidance)

Health Insurance

You won't be asked to show health insurance at immigration—but if you break a leg, you'll want a policy that includes medical evacuation. Local clinics can't handle much.

Current Health Requirements: COVID-19 testing and quarantine rules change fast. Check the Chadian Ministry of Public Health website and WHO travel advice before departure.
